A Heartrending Tragedy in Bat Yam: The Ukrainian Family's Untimely End

Missile strikes can be brutal, but they hit especially hard when they claim the lives of innocent civilians. Such was the case in a residential building in Bat Yam, a suburb of Tel Aviv, on a fateful Sunday morning. Among the devastating casualties were an 8-year-old girl named Anastasia (Nastia) Borik, her mother Maria Peshkurova, her grandmother Olena Peshkurova, her cousin Konstantin Totvich, and Ilya Peshkurov.
The family was in Israel since December 2022, seeking medical care for Nastia at Sheba Medical Center’s oncology unit due to her life-threatening leukemia. The father of the young girl was reportedly fighting in Ukraine against Russia.
This tragedy was part of a broader pattern of hostilities between Iran and Israel that have been escalating since December 2022. Over 400 missile attacks have targeted Israeli territory during this period, resulting in at least 24 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The Iranian missile that struck Bat Yam was the deadliest in recent days, killing at least nine people, including four Israelis.
The Israeli government has accused Iran of supporting militant groups opposed to Israel and launching missiles into civilian areas. This despicable act has raised grave humanitarian concerns and evokes the tragic human cost of the unresolved Israel-Iran proxy war.
Maria, Nastia's mother, was reported missing after the missile strike. The struck residential building in Bat Yam housed numerous families, with several other residents reportedly injured.
Since the beginning of the conflict, the Iranian government has continued its aggression, with missile and drone attacks on Israel. This escalation comes after a major attack by Israel on Iran last Friday, targeting primarily nuclear facilities and military installations in the country. The Israeli government's stated goal is to destroy Iran’s nuclear program.
