Israeli military threatens to employ extraordinary strength within Gaza City, urging prompt evacuation

In the wake of the October 7, 2023 massacre on Israeli soil, tensions have reached a boiling point in Gaza City. Here's a timeline of events that have transpired:

On Tuesday, Israel launched a major ground and air offensive on Gaza's largest city. The Israeli military spokesman urged the residents to flee towards the south via Al-Rashid Street, which, according to the spokesman, is the only possible route south for Palestinians to flee Gaza City.

The Salah al Din road, the main north-south route that crosses the Gaza Strip, was closed to southbound traffic. This decision came as the Israeli army warned that it would employ 'unprecedented force' in Gaza City.

The United Nations General Assembly was discussing the recognition of the Palestinian State three days before Israel launched its offensive in Gaza City. However, an independent commission appointed by the UN accused Israel of committing a "genocide" in Palestinian territory in a report. Israel rejected this accusation and dismissed the report as "biased and false".

The Israeli retaliatory campaign has been devastating. According to figures from the Hamas-governed territory's Ministry of Health, at least 65,141 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip. Most of these casualties were civilians. The Israeli army estimates that nearly half of the hostages in Gaza are dead.

Islamic commandos killed 1,219 people in Israel, most of them civilians, during the October 7, 2023 attack. At least 250 people were kidnapped during the attack in Israel, and more than 40 of them are still in Gaza, according to the Israeli army's estimates.

The international community's response to the conflict has been varied. The United States strongly supports Israel in its Gaza offensive, maintaining close military and diplomatic backing. Other Western countries like Canada and Australia show political support but have recognized Palestine as a state, indicating mixed stances. Germany has restricted arms exports to Israel but seeks a balanced policy without direct military involvement, while Qatar urges ceasefire efforts but hosts significant U.S. military presence nearby. Overall, U.S. involvement is the strongest and most direct, with other countries providing mainly political or limited material support.
