Israeli military actions lead to the demolition of 10 UNRWA facilities in Gaza, as asserted by the United Nations Commissioner
In the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is struggling to maintain its vital water and sanitation services, as they are now operating at only half capacity.
Over the past four days, Israeli strikes have devastated the region, destroying 10 UNRWA buildings in Gaza City, including 7 schools and 2 clinics serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians. The ensuing chaos has forced over 100,000 Palestinians to flee their homes since Aug. 11.
The enclave of Gaza is now facing the threat of famine due to the devastation caused by the war. Intense Israeli bombing, particularly in Gaza City's western neighborhoods since Friday, has resulted in the destruction of 1,600 towers and residential buildings.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has expressed concern over the intensifying airstrikes, stating that "no place is safe in Gaza and no one is safe." He noted that UNRWA was forced to suspend health care at the Al-Shati refugee camp, the only health care available north of Wadi Gaza.
Lazzarini praised the determination of UNRWA's teams, totaling 11,000, to continue providing critical services in other parts of northern Gaza and the rest of the Gaza Strip. However, the majority of Gaza City's residents are now crowded into its western neighborhoods, making the distribution of essential services even more challenging.
Israel's ongoing war in Gaza has been a topic of international concern, with the state of South Africa filing a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on December 29, 2023. The case accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention during its military actions in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army has been targeting high-rise buildings across Gaza City as part of its ongoing offensive to occupy Gaza City. In an effort to evacuate civilians, the Israeli army has ordered residents to move southward to a "safe humanitarian zone" in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis. However, this zone has come under Israeli fire more than 100 times, killing hundreds of civilians.
As the conflict continues, Lazzarini questions when action will be taken to reach a ceasefire and bring much-needed relief to the people of Gaza. The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.
