Israeli military action leaves 18 dead, Hamas addresses disarmament rumors; casualties include those attempting to obtain food resources
In the midst of ongoing ceasefire negotiations, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate. According to the United Nations' human rights office, at least 859 people have been killed "in the vicinity" of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid sites since late May.
The violence has been intense, with Dr Tom Adamkiewicz, a hospital worker in Gaza, describing the situation as "Palestinian children, women, and men being shot at, basically like rabbits."
The visit by Steve Witkoff, Middle East envoy for former U.S. President Donald Trump, and Mike Huckabee to the GHF has been met with criticism. Critics claim the visit was designed to mislead public opinion and provide political cover for Israel's actions in Gaza. Hamas has labelled the visit a "staged show."
Hamas's stance on disarmament is clear: they will not disarm unless a fully sovereign, independent Palestinian state is established, with Jerusalem as its capital. This condition on disarmament has been reiterated amid the ongoing Gaza ceasefire negotiations and the current conflict dynamics.
Hamas considers resistance and its arms as a legitimate national and legal right as long as the occupation continues. The organisation still holds around 50 abductees, with 20 believed to be alive.
The war in Gaza began on 7 October 2023 as a result of Hamas-led militants killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in an attack on Israel and abducting 251 others.
The US and Israel-backed GHF has been marred by controversy and fatal shootings since its establishment earlier this year. Gaza health officials have stated that more than a dozen people have been killed by Israeli fire in various incidents. Witness Yahia Youssef reported seeing several people wounded by gunshots near a food distribution center.
As of now, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's retaliatory offensive, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. Elidalis Burges, a critical care nurse in Gaza, called the visit by American officials a "PR stunt," claiming they were only shown a small portion of what is actually happening in Gaza.
Hamas has released a video showing Israeli man, Evyatar David, being held hostage in what appears to be a tunnel. The ministry does not differentiate between militants and civilians in its count.
The ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue to complicate ceasefire efforts and negotiations focused on ending hostilities and resolving related issues such as hostage releases. The persisting conflict dynamics underscore the urgency for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
