In a heated debate held at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, various nations expressed their concern and condemnation over Israel's actions following an airstrike in Qatar on 9 September 2023.

The debate, which took place during a meeting to discuss the attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar, saw Saudi Arabia's envoy, Abdulmohsen Majed Binkhothaila, accusing Israel of a systematic behaviour based on indiscriminate killings and forced displacement, actions he claimed violated all international norms and laws.

Israel, however, strongly rejected the U.N. Commission's accusations of genocide in Gaza. In a statement, its ambassador in Geneva, Daniel Meron, labelled the debate as a one-sided attack on Israel, marking another chapter in the Council's ongoing abuse serving as a platform for anti-Israel propaganda. Israel did not attend the session in Geneva.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated that Israel's attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar was a breach of international law, an assault on regional peace and stability, and a blow against the integrity of mediation and negotiating processes.

Qatar, urging council members to hold Israel accountable for the strike in Doha, was joined by Algeria and Pakistan in condemning Israel's actions. Hamas claimed that the strike killed five of its members but not its leadership.

On a separate note, a U.N. Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. This conclusion, along with the Doha airstrike, risked undermining negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza's nearly two-year-old war.

In response, a coalition of Arab and Islamic states, including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab countries, came together in Doha on Monday to hold Israel accountable for its attack on negotiators in Doha on September 9 of the previous year and to condemn Israel's acts of terrorism and threat to regional stability. Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, Qatar's Minister of State for International Cooperation, described the Israeli strike as "state terrorism" and a direct threat to regional stability.

The international community's call for accountability and condemnation of Israel's actions in Qatar is a clear indication of the global concern over these incidents and the need for adherence to international law and peacekeeping efforts in the region. The situation remains a complex and sensitive issue, with ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza.
