Israeli foreign expansionism criticized by Turkish minister at Doha conference
In a strong statement made at an extraordinary joint meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab League foreign ministers, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned the latest attack by Israel and expressed concern over the country's expansionism in the region.
The meeting, which took place in Doha, Qatar, ahead of a leaders' summit scheduled for Monday, saw Fidan praising Qatar for its continued mediation efforts following Israel's attack on a building in Doha on September 9th. He also acknowledged Egypt's significant role in mediation efforts.
Fidan highlighted the strong friendship between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and noted that he has worked continuously with Qatar on mediation efforts, both during his previous role and in his current position.
The Turkish Foreign Minister identified Israel's dual objectives in the region as expanding its territory and establishing Greater Israel, and leaving regional countries weak and divided. He emphasized that Israeli expansionism poses a major threat to regional countries, particularly those neighboring Israel such as Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt.
Fidan also described the issue in the region as not just the Israeli-Palestinian problem, but also Israel's pursuit of expansionism in the region. He stated that Israel tries to keep Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq weak and divided, and expressed concern about developments in southern Syria, fearing that creating a division in Syria through societal fault lines will not benefit Syria or the region.
Fidan's statements come in response to ongoing Israeli territorial expansionism and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. He acknowledged that the U.S. political system has its own internal dilemmas about taking action on this issue, which must be acknowledged. However, he and President Erdogan consistently communicate to U.S. officials at every level about the impact of Israel's actions on regional and global security.
Fidan concluded his statements by suggesting that Arab and Islamic countries will discuss the necessary issues to identify this problem, stand against it, and mobilize the international community. He offered condolences to Qatar over the September 9th airstrike and praised Qatar's mediation role in the conflict in the strongest terms. He did not specify which other countries he is in communication with.
