Germany, known for its special relationship with the State of Israel, is set to commemorate the victims of the Hamas massacre that took place on October 7, 2023, in Israel. Jan Redmann, the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, has made a statement in the state parliament in Potsdam, calling for a consensus to remember the victims on the second anniversary of the tragic event.

The CDU parliamentary group in the Brandenburg state parliament will submit a request next week to have Israeli flags flown on public buildings on October 7. This move aims to honour the victims of the massacre, which resulted in the abduction of over 250 people to the Gaza Strip and triggered the subsequent Gaza war.

However, the BSW, led by Sahra Wagenknecht, has so far viewed the flying of Israeli flags critically. Redmann expressed hope that the Alliance for Progress and Social Justice (BSW) will find the courage to support the commemoration.

The CDU plans to submit a motion in the state parliament next week regarding the flying of Israeli flags to commemorate the victims of the Hamas massacre. The Ministry of the Interior has not yet commented on whether Israeli flags will be flown at government buildings and town halls on October 7.

Redmann stated that commemoration does not exclude criticism of the current Israeli government. He emphasised that this is a humanitarian issue, and it is crucial for all political parties to come together and remember the victims.

Germany's special relationship with Israel is rooted in shared values and a common history. The country has been a strong supporter of Israel and has consistently called for peace and stability in the region. The CDU's initiative to commemorate the victims of the Hamas massacre is a testament to this enduring bond.

As the date of October 7 approaches, the focus in Brandenburg will be on remembering the victims and promoting peace and unity. The CDU's call for a consensus in the parliament to remember the victims is a significant step towards this goal. The outcome of the motion, when it is tabled in the state parliament session next week, will be closely watched by both Germans and Israelis alike.
