Israeli authorities have detained filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, the director of "No Other Land."

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was attacked and arrested by Israeli authorities on March 24, 2025. The incident took place in Ballal's village and was met with widespread concern from activists and human rights groups.

The documentary No Other Land sheds light on Palestinian efforts to halt the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) from demolishing homes in the Masafer Yatta area south of Hebron. The attack on Ballal comes amid a broader escalation of violence and clampdowns on civic freedoms in the West Bank, including attacks on journalists and activists during a period of ongoing demolitions, military raids, and settler aggression.

The assault on Ballal occurred in a volatile environment where other collaborators on the film have also faced violence and intimidation. For instance, Palestinian co-director Basel Adra was attacked by masked Israeli settlers, and Israeli co-director Yuval Abraham and his family received death threats after the film's international recognition.

This arrest and assault took place shortly after a related tragic event where Awdah Hathaleen, a consultant on the film, was killed by an Israeli settler, highlighting the heightened danger and hostility faced by those involved in the film and Palestinian activism in the area.

Activists have raised concerns over potential future violent interactions between Palestinians and Israeli residents in the West Bank, following the attack on Ballal and the village of Umm al-Khair. They have called for action to prevent further violent interactions and advocated for the protection of Palestinian residents in the West Bank.

The Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the clash between Palestinians and Israeli residents in the West Bank resulted in damage to several vehicles. Local police were forced to intervene in the clash, leading to the arrest of individuals from both parties, including Ballal. However, Israeli forces later released Ballal after stopping him following his home attack.

Despite the release, the incident has left a lasting impact on the Palestinian community and activists, who continue to express their support for the protection of Palestinian residents in the West Bank following the attack on Hamdan Ballal. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions and violence in the region and the risks faced by those who stand up for their rights and document the realities of life under occupation.
