Israeli authorities apprehend 1,300 Palestinians in a West Bank urban area after an assault on military personnel.
In the West Bank city of Tulkarem, a series of intense Israeli military operations have been underway for the past eight months, causing widespread destruction and displacement. According to data provided by the Tulkarem Press Committee, between January 27, 2023, and an unspecified later date, 150 houses were destroyed and many more rendered uninhabitable due to military operations and conflicts involving Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.
The latest surge in violence began when Israeli military personnel were injured in an improvised explosive device attack in the occupied territory. In response, Israeli forces conducted extensive operations in Tulkarem and the Nur Shams refugee camp.
Last week, Israeli military detained approximately 1,300 Palestinians in Tulkarem over a 48-hour period. Among those detained were pharmacists, drivers, and passersby, as stated by Deputy Governor of Tulkarem, Faysal Selame. The detentions occurred alongside searches and what Palestinian officials described as mistreatment of detainees.
Selame characterized the operation as a situation aimed at making the people pay a price. He described the detention operation as a policy aimed at humiliating and degrading Palestinians.
Pharmacist Yazid al-Sargali was arbitrarily detained from his workplace along with his staff and customers. During detention, many detainees were bound, and their eyes were covered for hours. In an effort to provide aid, Al-Sargali provided medical treatment to some patients with diabetes and heart conditions who fainted during detention.
The ongoing conflict in Tulkarem has also resulted in approximately 2,573 additional homes sustaining partial damage. Videos from the scene showed hundreds of detained Palestinians surrounded by Israeli soldiers and military vehicles in a public square.
Suleiman Bisharat, director of the Yabous Center for Strategic Studies, compares the current Israeli military operations and mass detentions in Tulkarem to tactics used during the 1987 Intifada. The conflict and instability in Tulkarem have been ongoing since Israel's military campaign in Gaza began on Oct. 7, 2023.
As a result of the ongoing military operations, residents of Tulkarem have been forced to leave their homes, leaving behind destruction and devastation. The Israeli military raids on Tulkarem and its refugee camps continue to this day.
