Deadliest Single Attack on Journalists in Israel-Gaza War: Six Journalists Killed in Gaza City

In a tragic turn of events, six journalists, including Anas al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza City on August 10, 2025. This incident marks the deadliest single attack on journalists in the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.

The fatalities include Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa, and Al-Sharif, all employees of Al Jazeera. The Hamas-run government described the killings as "brutal and heinous."

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has labelled these killings as deliberate murders, targeting journalists due to their work. The CPJ had previously expressed "grave" concerns about al-Sharif's safety, citing real-life threats linked to Israeli media campaigns.

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the strike but claimed al-Sharif was a "terrorist" who "served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation." However, the IDF did not respond to CPJ's requests for comments or details on these claims.

Al-Sharif, in a post allegedly his "last will and testament," expressed regret over not being able to see his son and daughter grow up. He had also claimed to have witnessed children being crushed by Israeli bombs and missiles.

Prior to the strike, al-Sharif was allegedly "being targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign." The CPJ reported that al-Sharif's father was killed by an Israeli airstrike on their family home in December 2023 after the journalist received telephone threats from Israeli army officers.

It is worth noting that foreign reporters have been barred from covering the war independently since the latest conflict began in 2023. Israel shut down the Al Jazeera television network in the country in May last year.

As of 5 August, at least 186 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, with at least 13 of these deaths attributed to Israel in 2025 alone. This represents a significant increase from previous years.
