Israel set to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in Milan-Cortina
News Article: IOC Assures Safety and Inclusion for Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) addressed the final phase of preparations for the Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026 at a press conference in Milan on Wednesday. Christophe Dubi, the executive director of the IOC, assured that the security planning for the upcoming Winter Games is well in hand.
"Geopolitics is volatile, and therefore our first task is to ensure the safety of the participants and the public," Dubi stated. However, no further details about the security planning were provided.
Dubi also commented that the cases of Russia, Belarus, and Israel are different, but he did not elaborate on why this is the case. He confirmed that Israel will not be excluded from the Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026.
Giovanni Malagò, a former president of the Italian Olympic Committee, is the president of the Milano-Cortina 2026 foundation and a member of the IOC. Malagò called for a distinction to be made between political responsibilities and sporting ones. He pointed out that they are not talking about the governments of those countries, but about the Olympic committees. Malagò stated that Israel and Palestine have been recognized as two states, with two Olympic committees, both respectful of the Olympic Charter.
Officially, Israel has one recognized National Olympic Committee: the Olympic Committee of Israel, founded in 1933 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee since 1952. Both the Israeli and Palestinian Olympic Committees are officially recognized and hold equal rights according to the International Olympic Committee, and both must abide by the Olympic Charter to participate in Olympic competitions, including the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games.
The Olympic Charter is the document of the International Olympic Committee that upholds the fundamental principles of Olympism. It is important to note that the IOC does not get involved in political matters and leaves it to the respective countries to decide on their participation in the Games.
Malagò's comments were made according to the agency Efe. Dubi's response about Israel and Palestine's Olympic committees was already clear, according to Malagò.
The Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026 will take place from February 6 to 22 next year in northern Italy. The IOC did not provide any further details about why the cases of Russia and Israel are different. However, Dubi assured that the security planning for the Games is very good.
It is worth mentioning that the Israel Premier Tech team recently participated in the Vuelta a España, a cycling race, which is a testament to the country's commitment to sporting events.
The upcoming Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026 promises to be an exciting event, and the IOC is working hard to ensure its success while maintaining the principles of Olympism.
