Israel Proposes New Ceasefire Agreement for Gaza
As the clock ticks towards a potential Gaza ceasefire, negotiations for the release of hostages captured by Hamas remain stalled. Despite ongoing efforts by mediators including the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, approximately 100 hostages remain captive[2].
The latest development came last week when Hamas reportedly accepted a ceasefire and hostage release proposal. However, Israel has yet to respond, according to Qatari mediators[2]. This impasse has sparked nationwide protests among Israelis, calling for a ceasefire and full return of hostages[2].
The proposal includes the release of 200 Palestinian convicts jailed in Israel, in addition to the release of an unspecified number of imprisoned women and minors[1]. Hamas, on the other hand, has requested the release of hundreds of Gaza detainees, and the return of 10 living and 18 deceased hostages from Gaza[1].
A senior Israeli official has demanded the release of all remaining hostages in any future Gaza deal[1]. Meanwhile, Hamas has expressed its willingness to accept a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, controlling 75% of the enclave, and the entry of more humanitarian aid[1].
The background to this conflict dates back to a previous ceasefire agreement that took effect from January to March 2025, which included multiple hostage-prisoner exchanges between Israel and Hamas. However, that ceasefire broke down when Israel launched surprise airstrikes after Hamas refused to further release hostages or extend the ceasefire[1].
Political factors in Israel, including resistance from Prime Minister Netanyahu, and accusations of bad-faith negotiations on both sides, have complicated progress[1]. As of now, while Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal involving hostage release, Israel’s government has so far delayed engagement, and no new concrete agreement has been reached[1][2].
