Germany Halts Arms Exports to Israel Over Gaza Concerns

In a significant shift, Germany has decided to halt arms exports to Israel intended for use in the Gaza Strip, following Israel's announced plans for a full occupation of the region. This move reflects growing international concern over alleged violations of international humanitarian law and the risks of escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As the second-largest arms supplier to Israel after the United States, Germany has authorized thousands of export licenses worth billions of euros since 2003. However, this embargo follows actions by other countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Colombia, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and the UK, which have also suspended arms exports to Israel amid the Gaza war.

The ruling CDU government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, supports this embargo, emphasizing the need to avoid worsening the conflict and to align with international law. However, there is internal political backlash within Germany, notably from parts of Merz's own center-right CDU and CSU parties, which criticize the embargo as undermining Israel’s security and potentially "rewarding terrorism."

Meanwhile, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party opposes restrictions on arms exports to Israel. The AfD, historically supportive of Israel’s right to self-defense, tends to dismiss allegations of Israeli war crimes as politically motivated or exaggerations.

International bodies, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and UN human rights experts, have highlighted serious concerns regarding alleged crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. The ICJ found a "plausible" risk of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza as early as January 2024, and UN experts have warned that any arms transfers enabling actions in Gaza likely violate international humanitarian law and should cease immediately.

Despite the embargo, Germany maintains other defense cooperation ties with Israel, including ongoing contracts for advanced air defense systems not directly linked to Gaza operations. Chrupalla, a prominent political figure, emphasizes the need for the federal government to put pressure on Israel and asserts that crimes are being committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

The dispute within the Union faction is over the halt in arms deliveries to Israel, with Chrupalla stating that the hunger and killing of children in Gaza are crimes. AfD leader Tino Chrupalla has accused Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz of lacking assertiveness and has stated that the AfD supports the delivery stop.

A video conference with foreign policy experts of the CDU/CSU faction is still scheduled for today, providing an opportunity for further discussion on this complex and evolving issue. The AfD's opposition to arms deliveries to crisis and war zones has been clear in their election program, maintaining a consistent stance on this matter.
