Tensions Remain High in the West Bank and Gaza Strip
Israeli military operations have continued in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, resulting in numerous casualties. The clashes, primarily between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants, have stirred widespread concern from international bodies and governments.
Jewel on a Wednesday: Israeli Counter-terrorism Efforts in the West Bank
On a Wednesday in mid-January, Israeli military forces launched a series of counter-terrorism operations in the West Bank. Reports indicated that at least 19 Palestinians lost their lives by Friday, with three Hamas militants among them. While Israeli soldiers temporarily withdrew from various Palestinian cities, tensions persisted, particularly in Jenin, a known hub of Palestinian militants.
The situation unfolded dramatically on a Thursday evening, with explosions and smoke filling the air over the city's refugee camp. The United Nations voiced its concerns over the intensifying situation in the West Bank and appealed to both Israel and Palestine to exercise restraint.
Extended Confrontations in the Gaza Strip
Meanwhile, Israeli military operations have continued in the Gaza Strip. An AFP journalist reported artillery fire in the western section of Gaza City, while the Hamas-controlled civil defense reported two casualties in attacks on the Jabalia refugee camp. Three more individuals were declared dead in an attack near Khan Yunis, according to Nasser Hospital in the city.
In Khan Yunis, residents returning to their city discovered extensive destruction and the decaying remains of a neighbor. The Israeli military reportedly concluded a months-long operation in the central and southern Gaza Strip, during which over 250 "terrorists" were reportedly killed, and "terrorist facilities" were dismantled.
History of Escalating Crises
Since March 2025, Israel has imposed a complete blockade on aid entering the Gaza Strip. The move has contributed to an ongoing humanitarian crisis, with the lack of aid and absent government institutions leaving NGOs struggling to provide essential services. Over the past two years, the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has led to damage or destruction of over 90% of housing units, affecting more than 1.8 million people.
The fragile ceasefire, first implemented on January 19, 2025, has faced numerous obstacles due to insufficient aid and damaged infrastructure. Six newborns tragically lost their lives from the cold in February 2025, highlighting the urgent need for shelter items and aid.
A Call for Peace
In response to the escalating violence, the United Nations has called for an immediate de-escalation, urging both Israel and Palestine to maintain self-restraint. The international community has expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation and the use of force by Israeli forces. The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for intervention from the international community to avert a full-blown conflict.
