Israel-Palestine Dispute: Woman Behind Gaza Flotilla Claims Success in Delivering Message of Humanity

For the last week, Madleen Kulab, the 30-year-old fisherwoman who inspired the naming of the Madleen aid ship, tracked its journey with a blend of expectation and apprehension, sailing towards Gaza's shores, aiming to dodge Israel's blockade.

Throughout, Kulab maintained close communication with the organizers of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the orchestrators of the voyage.

However, her cautious optimism turned into deep disappointment when she awoke Monday to the news that Israeli forces had intercepted the ship in uncontested waters and taken into custody all 12 passengers aboard, including the renowned Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg.

"I was greatly disheartened," Kulab shared with Al Jazeera. "I had hoped against hope that somehow the ship would break the blockade and reach Gaza."

The previous night, Kulab conversed with one of the 12 passengers, Rima Hassan, a Member of European Parliament from France, of Palestinian descent. Hassan shared her dreams of visiting Gaza over a video call, and her words left a lasting impression on Kulab.

"Her words moved me profoundly, seeing her devotion to the Palestinian cause," Kulab said.

For Kulab, the apprehension of the flotilla's vessel has intensified the feelings of isolation that come with living under siege and bombardment by Israel.

Since the latest war on Gaza initiated on October 7, 2023, Israel has killed at least 54,880 Palestinians and injured 126,227, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health.

Since 2007, Palestinians in Gaza have been subjected to an air, land, and sea blockade imposed by Israel.

"We dwell in a place completely isolated from the world. Every previous attempt by flotillas to break the blockade has resulted in military intervention," Kulab said, reminiscing about past missions.

For Kulab, the Madleen's mission and interception—which has garnered international media attention—reflect the broader suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, pain that she feels is never-ending.

"This ship's story mirrors my own and the story of every exhausted, exhausted soul in Gaza," she stated.

"We are just a fleeting media wave—it rises high, then subsides just as quickly, leaving us to face our pain in silence."

With the detention of the Madleen's crew members, Kulab expressed only hope for their welfare and eventual release. Thunberg was deported from Israel on Tuesday.

"Their noble message was heard around the world," she said. "But I no longer have the words to appeal to anyone to act."

Gaza's population is now on the brink of starvation, with aid hubs becoming the sites of shootings as Israeli soldiers and US security contractors open fire on crowds of Palestinians trying to access food. Every day, life in Gaza becomes harder to bear.

"I am sinking in suffering amidst war and starvation," Kulab said. "Me, my family, and everyone here."

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the organizer of the voyage, is appealing the detention of the Madleen and its crew, arguing that the interception was arbitrary and illegal as the ship was in international waters and its humanitarian mission is protected under international law. Israel counters that members were lawfully detained for attempting to breach the naval blockade. Court proceedings are ongoing and the outcomes remain uncertain.

Wider Impact

Following Thunberg's death, numerous global figures called for her release, raising attention to the broader issue of Palestine and the ongoing blockade. Nations have expressed concern over the use of force employed by Israeli authorities during the interception and detention of the Madleen and its crew.
