Israel Redoubles Efforts - Netanyahu Slams Qatar Over Gaza Crisis
Israel Enacts Massive Mobilization of Reservists - Netanyahu Criticizes Qatar - Israel Mobilizes Tens of Thousands of Reservists - Netanyahu Accuses Qatar
Israel has ramped up its air attacks on Hamas targets in Gaza after a short-lived truce, initiating a fresh ground offensive. The Israeli army chief, Eyal Zamir, warned that this operation could expand if the hostages being held by Hamas aren't released soon.
Reports on Saturday indicated that thousands of reservists are being called up to replace soldiers currently stationed in Israel and the West Bank. An army spokesperson has neither confirmed nor denied these reports to AFP, but family members of AFP journalists have confirmed receiving the mobilization order.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has severely criticized Qatar for its involvement in the crisis. He accused Qatar of playing a double game, saying it's time for them to choose between civilization and Hamas' barbarism. On Saturday, Netanyahu delivered this message on the X platform, stating, "Israel will win this just war with just means."
Qatar swiftly dismissed Netanyahu's allegations, with foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari claiming that the Israeli prime minister's provocative remarks fell short of the most basic political and moral responsibilities.
Egypt and the USA, alongside Qatar, are key mediators in Israel's ongoing negotiations with Hamas over a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Qatar, for instance, hosts the political bureau of Hamas governing Gaza, as well as the largest US base in the Middle East.
In January, a ceasefire brokered by these countries became effective. However, attempts to negotiate a new ceasefire and secure the hostages' release have so far proved unsuccessful.
On Saturday, Hamas released a video featuring a captive man with bandages on his head and arm. Though much is still unclear about the video's authenticity or recording date, many believe it to be Maxim Herkin, a man with Israeli and Russian citizenship who was kidnapped by Hamas in the October 2023 attack on the Nova music festival in southern Israel.
Given the reference to Israel's upcoming Independence Day, it's believed the video was recorded close to that time.
The enraged population in Israel has continued to rally for the safe return of their loved ones. Thousands protested in Tel Aviv on May 1, with 64-year-old Arona Maskil, a protester, expressing, "We're here because we want the hostages to come home." The Hostage Families Forum maintains that public sentiment considers the return of these hostages the nation's highest moral priority.
