Israel Intensifies Efforts to Obliterate Gaza: World Stymied as Israel Aims for Genocide
The Gaza Strip has once again become the centre of global attention, as the latest stage of the war between Israel and Hamas continues unabated in the United States.
The conflict began following a Hamas-led attack on civilians on October 7, 2023, and Israel's subsequent retaliation. Since then, the region has witnessed a series of escalations, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
Israel launched a ground offensive on Tuesday, aimed at decimating Hamas but affecting around a million Palestinian people in Gaza City. The offensive, which has been ongoing, has resulted in widespread destruction, with urban centres in the Gaza Strip facing desertification due to controlled detonations.
Palestinians have been forced to seek shelter in makeshift camps, with many moving into tents due to the bombing of Gaza City. Southern pockets designated as safe zones are already teeming with displaced Palestinians, struggling to find basic necessities such as food and water.
Amidst this chaos, Palestinians are facing starvation, as aid struggles to get through due to Israel controlling all movement. The displaced Palestinians are not the only ones suffering; about 20 Israeli hostages are still thought to be held by Hamas.
The conflict has taken a toll on the international community as well. The United Nations Commission, led by a South African judge, has concluded that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. This conclusion has been met with international condemnation, including India expressing concerns over the invasion of Qatar's sovereignty.
Despite this, the US, despite Israel's strike against the peace negotiating team of Hamas in Qatar, has not taken significant action to halt the conflict. The US maintains a close relationship with Qatar, as evidenced by the royal house presenting a $400 million jet to former President Donald Trump.
Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is prolonging the war, disregarding the torment of hostages' families, growing protests in Israel, and the loss of European allies who are considering recognizing a Palestinian state. Netanyahu is running the ground offensive not because he believes in forcing Hamas to surrender to military might, but as a means to political survival and the support of hawkish far-right parties.
Peace talks have repeatedly broken down during the conflict, with Netanyahu pledging that there will be no Palestinian state. His determination to leave no inhabitable spaces in the Gaza Strip has escalated the conflict into an all-out destruction of Gaza City.
In a bid to revive the two-state solution amid ongoing conflict with Israel led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia have announced the recognition of a Palestinian state as of September 2025. France and Portugal have also made similar announcements, hoping to put pressure on Israel to negotiate a peace deal.
However, the latest stage of the war against Hamas has no real attainable objective, as the release of the last remaining hostages can only come in a peace deal. As the world watches as a hapless observer, the hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip remains elusive.
