In a bold move, the Israeli Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, has given the army orders to halt a sailing vessel carrying human rights activists from reaching Gaza. The boat, unreliably called "Madeleine" in some reports (though your query refers to it as "Medea"), carries Greta Thunberg among its passengers. Katz declared, "To Greta, the aspersed, and her cronies, peddlers of Hamas propaganda, I say clearly: retreat, for you won't reach Gaza."[1]

This sailing ship, part of the so-called "Freedom Flotilla," set sail from Sicily last Sunday with the intention of criticizing the Israeli blockade on aid deliveries to Gaza and the ongoing "genocide" in the region, as per French-Palestinian EU MP Rima Hassan.[2] However, Hassan is a controversial figure in France due to her inflammatory remarks on the Palestinian conflict. She was kept out of Israel in February during an EU parliamentary trip, according to her own account.

Thunberg initially aimed to embark on a Gaza-bound "Freedom Flotilla" ship in early May. However, the vessel suffered damage during its journey, with some activists suspecting an Israeli drone attack as the cause.[2] Thunberg has been an active participant in pro-Palestinian protests and the current conflict in Gaza can be traced back to a large-scale Hamas and allied militant attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, claiming around 1,210 lives according to Israeli figures.[2] [4]

Following the Hamas attack, Israel has been engaged in extensive military operations within Gaza. According to data from the Hamas-controlled health ministry, over 54,700 casualties have been tallied so far, with the UN endorsing these figures as reliable.[3]

  1. Amidst the ongoing political turmoil, war-and-conflicts, and general-news, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the Israeli Army continues to clash with activists such as Greta Thunberg and her colleagues aboard the "Medea" boat in the midst of the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
  2. As the crime-and-justice community grapples with rampant controversies surrounding figures like Rima Hassan, the ongoing developments between Thunberg and the Israeli government highlight the larger issue of freedom of speech and expression during times of conflict.
