Israel endangers lives of captured hostages, suggests Hamas
In the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, another division of Israeli troops has joined the operation in the southern region of the coastal strip, bringing the total number of troops to three divisions. Each division comprises approximately 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers, signifying a significant military presence.
The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, following attacks by Hamas and other Islamic terrorists on Israel, has taken a heavy toll. The Israeli army has targeted over 1,200 targets in Gaza City, with the aim of destroying one of the last strongholds of Hamas and securing the release of hostages. Currently, there are 48 hostages in the Gaza Strip, with 20 of them reportedly still alive.
The Israeli army continues to focus on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and targeting Hamas fighters both above and below ground. Two divisions of Israeli troops are advancing towards the city centre, with another division expected to join in the coming days.
However, the conflict has not been without controversy. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has expressed concern over Israel's reputation due to its military actions and the resulting civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.
The United Nations Security Council has voted in favour of a resolution calling for immediate humanitarian aid and a ceasefire in Gaza. All other 14 members, including 10 non-permanent members, supported the resolution, opposed by the US. The specific states opposing the US veto have not been individually named in the sources but are part of the unanimous majority excluding the USA.
The conflict has resulted in a significant displacement of civilians. More than 450,000 Palestinian residents have fled Gaza City since the start of the ground offensive. The Israeli army spokesman has stated that they are enabling the population to flee the city to a humanitarian zone in the south.
Unfortunately, the conflict has also claimed lives on both sides. Four Israeli soldiers were killed and three others injured in the Rafah area by a bomb planted on the side of the road. Two more Israeli soldiers were killed on Thursday in an attack at a border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank.
Hamas has threatened the Israeli army, stating that Gaza will be a graveyard for their soldiers. Hamas's military wing, the Kassam Brigades, has claimed to have prepared thousands of ambushes and explosive devices in Gaza City.
A tragic incident involved a Jordanian attacker who stabbed his victims, according to investigators. The suspected attacker arrived in a truck carrying humanitarian aid intended for the Gaza Strip.
Before the offensive, around one million people were in the city of Gaza. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of around 65,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, as a result of the Gaza war.
Israel's army chief, Eyal Zamir, has advised the political leadership to temporarily halt humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via the land route from Jordan. The military situation in the Gaza Strip continues to evolve, with both sides expressing determination to achieve their respective objectives.
