Mark Tessler to Deliver Lecture on Israeli-Palestinian Conflict at Sciences Po

On Thursday, 20 February 2025, Mark Tessler, Professor of Political Science and Research Professor at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, will deliver a lecture titled "Israël face aux Palestiniens(1948- 2025)" on the Paris campus of Sciences Po.

The lecture, which will take place in the Boutmy amphitheater from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, is the eighth in a series on the Middle East conflict organised by Sciences Po from October 2024 to April 2025.

Tessler, who is also the co-founder and co-Director of the Arab Barometer Survey project, a public opinion survey initiative conducted in Arab countries since 2006 (https://www.arabbarometer.org), is expected to provide a balanced, comprehensive historical overview of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from 1948 to the present.

In his lecture, Tessler will discuss the state of Israel's interactions with the Palestinians from 1947 to the present, covering key moments in the conflict such as the 1948 Arab-Israeli War (Nakba to Palestinians), subsequent wars including the 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1973 Yom Kippur War, peace efforts such as the Oslo Accords, the intifadas, the Abraham Accords, conflicts in Gaza since 2008, and modern developments up to 2025.

Tessler's expertise in the political science of the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict means that his lecture is likely to frame these major historical junctures, peace efforts, and conflicts in the context of regional and international dynamics, leading up to the latest conflicts of 2023–2025 involving Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.

Tessler has authored or co-authored sixteen books, including Social Science Research in the Arab World and Beyond, A History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Public Opinion in the Middle East: Survey Research and the Political Orientations of Ordinary Citizens, and Islam and Politics in the Middle East: Explaining the Views of Ordinary Citizens. His latest book, Social Science Research in the Arab World and Beyond, can be downloaded free of charge.

In addition to his work as a scholar, Tessler was the past president of the American Institute for Maghrib Studies and the Association for Israel Studies.

This lecture is not to be missed for anyone interested in understanding the complex history and current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
