Stuck in Tel Aviv: Carola Veit's Middle East Misadventure - Four Nights in an Israeli Shelter
Israel Resident Remains Sheltered: Fourth Occurrence for Veit - Israel Detainment Persists for Veit: Fourth Time in Secure Quarters
Get the scoop on Hamburg's parliamentary president, Carola Veit, who's found herself stranded in the war-torn city of Tel Aviv.
She's holed up in a hotel, in touch with the German embassy, and biding her time. "It's like a bloody war zone down here," Veit told the German Press Agency. Life in the city is more or less on lockdown, with no buses, trains, taxis, or even the Shabbat sparing a moment's respite.
The 52-year-old, who initially aimed to fly back to Hamburg on Friday morning following her four-day visit to Israel, now finds herself doubtful about making it back home anytime soon. "Every day's a roll of the dice. I'm not exactly packing my bags today, and tomorrow's looking a little shaky too."
An unexpected turn of events saw Veit seeking shelter in her hotel four times on Saturday night. "All clear in 90 seconds, then holed up in the shelter until the all-clear sounds again. It's a bloody stressful situation, but hey, it's the same for everyone here."
Israel launched a large-scale air attack on Iranian cities and nuclear facilities on Friday night, triggering counterattacks from the Islamic Republic. As the region burns, Veit finds herself caught in the crossfire.
During her visit to Jerusalem, Veit stopped at the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem and the Knesset, among other places. She also ventured to Ashdod and Be'er Sheva. Her journey to Israel, planned over two years following an invitation from the Israeli ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, has remained untouched by the war following the terrorist attack by the radical Islamic Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.
A Quick Peek at the Current Middle East Conflict Scene
- Israel and Iran: Tensions have escalated between Israel and Iran, leading to Israel's increased military action against Iran's energy infrastructure. Iran has responded with threats and reports of coordinated attacks by Iranian-backed groups.
- Houthi Attacks on Israel: The Houthi forces have targeted Israel with drone and missile attacks since June 12, including a ballistic missile aimed at Ben Gurion Airport and intercepted drones. The Houthis support Iran in any conflict with Israel.
- Gaza Conflict: Ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip has led to significant casualties, with over 54,000 Gazans reported killed by the end of May 2025, and a massive displacement of Palestinians from Rafah.
