Israel denies climate activist Greta Thunberg permission to visit Gaza.
The Defiant Voyage: Greta Thunberg Challenges Israel's Gaza Blockade
Climate activist Greta Thunberg and her fellow activists boarded the sailing ship, Madleen, bound for the Gaza Strip. The vessel, a part of the so-called "Freedom Flotilla," aimed to breach Israel's maritime blockade, promising aid deliveries and criticizing the ongoing turmoil in the Gaza Strip.
Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Katz, issued a stark warning. "We will not allow anyone to defy our maritime blockade, set in place to secure our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens," Katz said. The blockade, established since Hamas took power in 2007, is Israel's primary means of preventing weapons supplies to the militant group.
The Campaigner's Undeterred Resolve
Politicians like Rima Hassan, a MP from France's far-left party LFI, have been outspoken critics of Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories. In February, Hassan was denied entry to Israel as part of an EU parliamentary visit.
In an earlier attempt in early May, Thunberg set sail for the Gaza Strip. The voyage was foiled when the ship faced damages en route, with pro-Palestinian activists suspecting an Israeli drone attack. Thunberg has been a consistent supporter of pro-Palestinian protests.
Aid Onboard, Protests Ashore
Meanwhile, the civil conflict in the Gaza Strip rages on. Overnight, a reported ten civilians were killed in Israeli attacks, with many more injured. The deaths occurred while civilians were collecting aid supplies at a distribution center west of Rafah.
The Israeli army claimed that the civilians had disregarded warnings and advanced towards the soldiers, thereby putting themselves at risk. However, the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip alleged that the Israeli army was spreading misinformation to support Hamas' "war goals."
Israel has accused the Civil Defense spokesman, Mahmud Bassal, of being an "active terrorist" of radical Islamic Hamas. Bassal, in response, denies these accusations, stating that he works for no military organization and has been operating with the Civil Defense for years, providing aid to victims of Israeli airstrikes.
The Gaza Conflict: A Protracted Struggle
The Gaza conflict began in October 2023, following a large-scale attack by Hamas and its affiliated fighters on Israel. The attack resulted in the death of approximately 1,210 people, with 251 people taken hostage in the Gaza Strip. Israel responded with large-scale military operations in the Gaza Strip, causing over 54,880 casualties, the majority of whom were civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-controlled health ministry. The UN considers these numbers to be credible.

Intriguing Note: Greta Thunberg and her fellow activists on the Madleen wished to deliver aid and highlight their moral obligation to support the Palestinians by attempting to breach Israel's maritime blockade[1]. The activists viewed their mission as an effort to open up a humanitarian corridor and protest against the perceived "genocide" in the Gaza Strip. Despite Thunberg's passionate activism, Israel's persistent maritime blockade effectively deterred the aid ship's approach.
The Commission, in light of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, is proposing to extend the deadline for the submission of proposals to the Council concerning the humanitarian crisis and politics of the region, including war-and-conflicts and general-news. Greta Thunberg, a prominent activist, continues to show resolute support for the Palestinians, willing to risk challenging Israel's maritime blockade in an attempt to deliver aid, Despite Israel's Defense Minister's warning against defying the blockade.
