German authorities arrest suspect linked to far-right extremist network for alleged planning of violent attacks - "Israel Conflict: Masucci Injured in Military Engagements"

German thespian Oliver Masucci was in Israel for half a year during the bloody Gaza conflict, filming the series "The German." At a soiree in Jerusalem's Sam Spiegel Film and Television Academy, the 56-year-old mused, "I felt compelled to have my babes here, 'cause it was a long stint."

"The German" debuted at "Series Mania," Old France's jumbo series carnival, in March and nabbed the top screenplay prize. Soon, the American-Israeli historical drama will air on Magenta TV Germany.

Auschwitz survivor aids in Nazi-hunting

In this eight-parter, Masucci transforms into a German Jew who survived Auschwitz and lives with kin in a kibbutz near the Sea of Galilee. Coerced by Israel's undercover agency Mossad, he joins the hunt for Nazi culprits in Germany, unearthing long-buried secrets from his own past. The script was penned by Ronit Weiss-Berkowitz ("The girl from Oslo") and Moshe Zonder, who also co-developed "Fauda" and "Teheran." Gabriel Bibliowicz directed the series.

At first, his kids were scared to visit Israel during the fighting, especially his popular teen daughter hailed from the Netflix hit "Dark." But, Masucci felt it essential to share this harrowing experience with them. Together, they explored war-torn Israeli towns near Gaza and chatted with Hamas massacre survivors on October 7, 2023.

Crash-coursed Hebrew

For the series, filmed in German, English, and Hebrew, set in '70, he crammed for Hebrew in a rush class. The concept appealed to him right off the bat, he shared, "They asked if we could do it in Hebrew - and I gave 'em a hard 'no.' I explained to the initiators why it was a no-go for half an hour. They acquiesced but then asked if we could still do it." He chuckled and obliged.

When filming abroad, Masucci always digs deep into the local cuisine and culture. "If I made a movie in Gaza, I dunno what'd happen," he joked. "One thing's for sure: This war must end."

His advice to aspiring thespians and directors: "Ignore the fear others try foisting upon you. Listen to the voice in you that dreams."
