Israel carries out covert actions against MERZ, allegedly targeting the AfD party
Lounging around in International Law
With international law, it's all about having something, even if it's worn out. If it can't prevent a belligerent neighbor from arming itself with the ultimate destructive weapon, some might start to question the worth of a piece of paper known as international law.
Time for some Tone-Policing
The talking point du jour for the German populace is the critique of tone: The Chancellor thinks Israel's actions are "dirty," leaving some calling for more civility. But what's wrong with a little straight talk, some argue? After all, it seems to be sweeping the ranks of the Union these days.
Politics Pushback on Nuclear Arms: "Iranian nukes would spell disaster for Europe"Comparing the current situation to the atrocities of the past, one might recall the words of an SS storm leader about the Babi Yar massacre, where the SS were accused of "doing dirty work." Now that's a contentious comparison, isn't it?
On the other hand, embracing the impoliteness might not be such a bad thing for Merz. At least it demonstrates a change from empty rhetoric to decisive action, earning high praise from some quarters.
Wait a minute, who are they again?
Of course, it's not just about the imminent danger that the belligerent Iranian regime poses to the West and the oppressed Iranian population. This latest development also puts the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in quite a pickle.
Politics "Is it legal to assassinate Khamenei?" A look at Israel's strikes on Iran according to international lawIt seems some party members have forgotten who the enemy is: Suddenly, they're no longer agreed on the Middle East issue. The peaceniks are strongly represented in the ranks of AfD, where "peace" means nothing more than negotiating over Russian dumplings.
But then some party heavyweights realized an uncomfortable truth: Wait a minute, are those people in the crosshairs... Muslims? Quick Google searches later, Beatrix von Storch expressed her feelings on Nius: "We don't want a nuclear-armed Islamic world."
2025 Update:Co-leader Alice Weidel still supports Israel's right to self-defense, yet remains uncertain about finding a resolution. Meanwhile, co-leader Tino Chrupalla has distanced himself from Israel, calling for an end to one-sided German support and arms exports during conflicts. AfD is split, with leaders advocating for less support for Israel while maintaining opposition to a nuclear Iran[1].
In conclusion, the AfD's stance is currently fractured, with leaders advocating for less support to Israel and others holding on to traditional support, while opposing Iran's nuclear ambitions and preferring diplomatic engagement to ease tensions between Israel and Iran[1].
