Ramped-Up Tensions in Gaza: Israel Deploys Thousands of Reservists Amidst Looming Offensive

Israel Calls Up Multiple Tens of Thousands of Reservists for Duty

In an apparent prelude to an intensified confrontation, Israel's military is gearing up for a potential escalation of attacks in the Gaza Strip. While no official decision has been announced, the Israeli army is issuing draft notices to an estimated multitude of reservists, foreshadowing a possible large-scale operation.

As per Israeli news outlet "ynet," an enhanced offensive may unfold in the near future, with the aim of accelerating the pressure on Hamas and securing the release of more hostages. The phased deployment of reservists is expected to replace existing soldiers stationed at Israel's northern border and in the occupied West Bank, who will be redirected to the Gaza Strip.

Israel's security cabinet will reportedly convene on Sunday to discuss strategies regarding a potential escalation of the Gaza conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have granted initial approval to such plans, according to reports in Israeli media.

Bypassing Hamas: Aid Delivered Directly to Gaza

This renewed mobilization of reservists, although substantial in scale, is reportedly smaller compared to the immediate aftermath of the Hamas and extremist group attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains in a shambles, with aid organizations reporting disastrous conditions. For over two months, Israel has prohibited any relief deliveries into the sealed-off area, where approximately two million Palestinians reside. The resumption of air strikes on suspected Hamas strongholds, which started in mid-March following a brief two-month ceasefire, has further exacerbated the predicament.

Currently, Israeli sources claim that 24 hostages and the remains of 35 abducted individuals are being detained in Gaza. Recent media exposés have sparked public outcry amongst affected families, who accuse Netanyahu of undermining the hostages' safety through the military campaign.
