Israel arms embargo approval imminent for PSOE members assured
The Spanish Government has reiterated its commitment to approve the arms embargo on Israel 'as soon as possible.' The announcement, made by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez ten days ago, has been met with both support and criticism from various coalition partners and parliamentarians.
In Cairo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, made the statement, emphasizing the Spanish Government's stance on the matter. The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has also denied that the delay in approving the embargo is due to problems in her department.
Robles further explained that since October 7, 2023, the sending or purchasing of material to Israel has stopped. She also stated that there is no longer any 'contractual' link with Israel, and currently, Spanish companies are carrying out the work that was previously contracted.
However, Robles did mention that there were some loose ends regarding technology, but they were closed before the summer. She also asserted that many contracts with Israel have already been 'made ineffective.'
Podemos, a prominent coalition partner, has been vocal about the issue. Ione Belarra, the leader of Podemos, initially criticized the failure to approve the arms embargo against Israel, considering it 'cheap electioneering' and predicting that it will not be approved.
Podemos has also accused the Ministry of Economy of 'deliberate inaction' for not stopping the arms trade with Israel and 'preventing the transit through Spain of the armament intended for said country.' They have presented a request for the revocation of all authorizations and the suspension of the arms trade with Israel, but denounce that Economy has ignored this request.
Gabriel Ruffián, the spokesman for ERC in the Congress, considered the delay in approving the arms embargo on Israel as a response to the style of Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE. Some coalition partners and parliamentarians have also joined in the criticism, expressing concerns about the delay.
Despite the criticism, the Spanish Government remains steadfast in its commitment to approve the arms embargo on Israel. The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, sent a message of 'calm' and reiterated the PSOE's commitment to approve the embargo. The royal decree on the arms embargo, considered complex, affects the Ministries of Defense, Commerce, Foreign Affairs, and Finance.
The Spanish Government has assured that the arms embargo on Israel will be approved 'in a matter of days.' As the process moves forward, the public will be closely watching to see how the Government handles this sensitive issue.
