Israel is stepping up its game in Gaza, summoning an estimated 10,000 reservists to escalate and extend the ongoing offensive. "The next few weeks will see a increase in our operational zone and an all-out assault on the infrastructure of Hamas in Gaza," declared Israeli army chief Eyal Samir during a press conference on Sunday. Israel's goal? To secure the release of their missing citizens and eliminate Hamas' influence.

Samir's announcement follows a series of threats aimed at tightening the screws on the Islamic militant group. With a potential surge in military operations on the horizon, the Israeli security cabinet will convene later on Sunday to iron out the fine details.

The battleground between Israel and Hamas has been breaching new levels of chaos for over a year now, following the vicious attack on Israel in October 2023. The initial assault took the lives of nearly 1,200 individuals, and resulted in the kidnapping of over 250 more. Israel was unavoidably prompted to retaliate with an aggressive operation in the Gaza Strip. Preliminary, yet unsettling, reports indicate that over 52,500 civilian deaths have occurred since the conflict's inception.

While the exact death toll remains uncertain, there is growing apprehension in international circles over the situation. Amnesty International has recently accused Israel of engaging in a string of strategic, yet questionable, tactics. In a damning May 2025 report, the organization condemned Israel for implementing a prolonged siege, preventing essential aid and commercial goods from reaching the Gaza Strip. This contentious move, Amnesty claims, amounts to a form of genocide and violates international humanitarian laws. Their argument hinges on the premise that Israel's objective is to inflict unbearable conditions on the inhabitants of Gaza, ultimately driving them to flee their homes.

Essential resources are becoming increasingly scarce in Gaza, with the siege preventing critical aid from reaching the region. This grim situation is further exacerbated by Israel's relentless military operations and indiscriminate collective punishment. With the conflict raging on without signs of abating, it's no wonder that Amnesty International highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis and raises the specter of a genocidal act.
