Israel and South Sudan in negotiations for Gazan refugees' acceptance
Israeli aid is making its way to South Sudan, but the future of potential discussions regarding the resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza remains uncertain.
According to confirmed reporting, Israel is in talks with South Sudan about the possibility of resettling Palestinians from Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims to realize U.S. President Donald Trump's vision for the voluntary departure of a large portion of Gaza's population. However, the details and progress of these discussions remain unclear and unofficial from both governments.
South Sudan, currently grappling with its own conflicts and humanitarian crises, has not publicly confirmed any talks or agreement regarding the potential resettlement. The country, which hosts millions of displaced people, faces complex challenges in accepting Palestinians from Gaza.
Israeli sources and some individuals close to the matter have confirmed discussions on the relocation of Palestinians to South Sudan. Yet, South Sudan’s foreign ministry has declined comment or not responded to inquiries, indicating no official endorsement or rejection yet.
The proposal faces strong opposition from Palestinians, rights organizations, and much of the international community, as it is perceived as potentially amounting to forcible population transfer, violating international law.
Meanwhile, Egypt is reportedly working to persuade South Sudan not to accept Palestinian Arabs from Gaza. An Israeli delegation is planning a visit to South Sudan to explore the establishment of camps for Palestinian Arabs. South Sudan may view the potential initiative as a means to improve relations with the Trump administration.
In summary, while talks reportedly exist, there is no confirmed or public official agreement from South Sudan. The plan remains highly disputed and uncertain internationally. The Foreign Minister of South Sudan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem declined to comment on the matter. The discussions are part of an effort to encourage mass migration from Gaza.
