Israel has reportedly given Hamas a one-week deadline to accept certain conditions for Gaza, as revealed by the Wall Street Journal. The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has shown openness to a phased ceasefire deal, according to an official source from Hamas, speaking to Xinhua.

The proposed deal, developed with Egypt, has two phases. The initial phase includes the release of between 20 and 33 hostages in exchange for a temporary truce and the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. This phase is aimed at establishing a foundation for peace.

The second phase involves the restoration of sustainable calm in the Gaza Strip. This phase includes the exchange of remaining Hamas hostages, including IDF soldiers, for a large number of Palestinian prisoners. The details of this phase are yet to be finalised.

Israel, however, has not abandoned its initial goals in Gaza, including the destruction of Hamas, even in the context of the proposed ceasefire deal. This has raised concerns about the long-term viability of the peace agreement.

The Egyptian official involved in negotiating the peace plan with Israel for Hamas has not been explicitly named in current reports. Egypt acts as a mediator along with Qatar and the US in talks conducted in Cairo, representing Hamas' interests indirectly.

The new ceasefire proposal was revealed by CNN. It remains to be seen whether Hamas will accept the conditions within the given timeframe, and whether a lasting peace can be achieved in Gaza.
