Israel aims to transform Syria into a chaotic zone, claims Syrian President.

After months of intense conflict, a ceasefire has been agreed upon in the Sweida region of Syria, marking a significant development in the country's turbulent political landscape. The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, confirming the end of the clashes that have plagued the region since early this year.

The agreements, confirmed by a source in the Syrian Defense Ministry to the local radio station Sham FM, include the integration of the Sweida province within the Syrian state. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, has entrusted the responsibility for maintaining security in the Sweida region to local factions and the Druze leadership.

The current situation in Sweida has been marked by sectarian violence, Israeli military strikes, and political instability. The predominantly Druze city has experienced clashes primarily between Druze residents and Bedouin fighters, with witnesses claiming that Syrian government forces actually sided with the Bedouin fighters against the Druze community. In response to the violence, Israel launched a series of airstrikes targeting Syrian military installations and government buildings.

The ceasefire follows the deployment of local internal security forces in the city, with Syrian regime forces beginning to withdraw from Sweida. Sheikh Yosef Jarboua, a representative of the spiritual leadership of the Druze in Syria, has confirmed the ceasefire agreement between the Syrian regime and the Druze forces in the Sweida province.

However, not all parties are in agreement. Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, a member of the Druze leadership, denies the existence of the ceasefire. Al-Sharaa has accused Israel of attempting to undermine Syria's internal stability and warned against groups working to drag Syria into dangerous directions. He claimed that Israel aims to turn Syria into a zone of anarchy, drag it into internal conflicts, and divide the country.

The international community has emphasised dialogue, reconciliation, and political inclusion as the only path to lasting stability. The United Nations stresses the urgent need for humanitarian access and transparent investigations into abuses, calling for genuine reconciliation among Syria’s diverse communities and an inclusive political process to restore security and stability.

As the situation in Sweida continues to evolve, the international community will be closely watching to see if the ceasefire holds and if it marks a turning point in Syria's long and complex conflict.

The ceasefire agreement in the Sweida region, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is being contested by some parties, particularly Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri from the Druze leadership, who denies its existence. The international community, meanwhile, is closely monitoring the developments in Sweida, with the United Nations calling for dialogue, reconciliation, and political inclusion as the key to lasting stability in the war-torn country.
