Israel advances proposal for a new security accord to restore and bolster borders with Syria
The Israeli government has presented a comprehensive and detailed proposal for a new security agreement with Syria, a move that could potentially replace the obsolete 1974 disengagement agreement. The proposal, confirmed by Syria's transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa during ongoing negotiations between the two states, is modelled after the 1979 peace agreement with Egypt, dividing territory into zones with varying security arrangements.
The current proposal for Syria calls for a broad demilitarized and no-fly zone on Syrian territory, with no reciprocal changes on the Israeli side. The area southwest of Damascus would be divided into three zones, with varying limitations on Syrian forces and weaponry. The plan seeks to extend the existing buffer zone by 2km on the Syrian side.
A meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for Wednesday in London. The meeting involves Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibni, and US envoy Tom Barrack. The proposal includes a detailed map of proposed security zones from Damascus to the Israeli border.
While sources describe progress, a final agreement does not appear imminent. Despite this, the negotiations are seen as a significant step towards peace and stability in the region.
The Israeli proposal, if accepted, could mark a new era of security and cooperation between Israel and Syria. The two countries have been in a state of conflict for decades, and a resolution to this conflict could have far-reaching implications for the entire Middle East.
As negotiations continue, both sides remain cautiously optimistic about the potential for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict. The meeting in London is expected to provide valuable insights into the prospects of a new security agreement between Israel and Syria.
