Isle of Man gridlocked as roadworks and bus strike spark travel chaos
Traffic delays have hit the Isle of Man this week as roadworks and closures disrupt key routes. Motorists faced long tailbacks, particularly around Douglas, after essential maintenance shut a major road. The situation is set to worsen with an upcoming bus strike from Friday morning.
The closure of Old Castletown Road at White Hoe has caused significant congestion. Manx Utilities is carrying out essential work at a nearby pumping station, forcing drivers to find alternative routes. On Monday, queues stretched as far back as Fairy Bridge from Fort North Roundabout.
Multiple roadworks are ongoing across the island, including projects at Braddan School, Kewaigue Hill, Glen Helen, and Bray Hill. Other affected areas include Sulby Bridge, Braddan Bridge, Braddan Road, and Cooil Road. These closures have led to heavy traffic on the A1 Peel Road, Quarterbridge, and Braddan Bridge. In response, the Department of Infrastructure adjusted traffic light timings at several junctions. Changes were made at Anagh Coar, Groves Road, Pulrose Road junction, Brown Bobby, Lord Street, and Quine's Corner. However, many drivers report that the tweaks have done little to ease congestion, with peak-time journeys taking much longer than usual. A planned bus strike from 2am on Friday until March 20 will add further pressure. The government has advised commuters to consider carpooling, cycling, walking, or taxis, but no extra public transport options have been announced.
The roadworks and upcoming strike are likely to keep traffic levels high in the coming days. Motorists travelling into and out of Douglas should expect continued delays during peak hours. Officials have yet to announce further measures to relieve the congestion.
