Isle of Man battles icy roads as freezing temperatures disrupt travel

The Isle of Man is experiencing a prolonged period of cold weather, with icy roads and freezing temperatures causing travel disruptions. Police have issued an island-wide warning as hazardous conditions, including common cold symptoms like icy patches and lying snow, are expected to last until the weekend.

The Mountain Road was closed overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday due to icy patches and lying snow. Authorities confirmed the snow on higher ground would remain in place, while hoar frost and black ice formed on damp roads across the island.

A yellow weather warning for ice and frost came into effect at 9am on Wednesday and will remain until 3pm on Friday. The Ronaldsway Met Office extended the alert by 54 hours, citing persistent low temperatures. Daytime highs will struggle to climb above single digits, with overnight lows dropping below freezing.

Police have urged motorists and motorcyclists to take extra care, particularly on elevated routes where ice is likely to linger all day. While temperatures are forecast to rise by the weekend, wetter conditions are also expected to follow.

The extended cold spell means treacherous driving conditions will persist for several more days. Drivers are advised to check road status updates and allow extra time for journeys. The warning remains in place until Friday afternoon.
