Islanders sign undrafted standout Joshua Kotai to entry-level deal
The New York Islanders have signed goaltender Joshua Kotai to a two-year, entry-level contract. The undrafted free agent joins the team after a standout collegiate career at Augustana University, where he earned multiple accolades in recent seasons. Kotai's rise began in junior hockey with the Battlefords North Stars in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). During the 2022-23 season, he led the team to an SJHL championship, posting a 12-1-0 playoff record and a 1.72 goals-against average. His regular-season performance was equally impressive, with a 32-4-3 record and a .935 save percentage.
At Augustana University, Kotai played 79 games over three seasons, compiling a 39-30-9 record and eight shutouts. His junior year saw him achieve a 20-11-4 record, five shutouts, and a .938 save percentage. These efforts earned him the team's MVP award for the 2024-25 season. The 2025-26 season proved even stronger. Kotai started all 26 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) conference games, finishing with a 14-8-4 record and a .941 save percentage. His dominance led to him being named both the CCHA Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year. Currently, he ranks second among Division-1 netminders in saves made and save percentage. Despite his success, Kotai has yet to play in the NHL. His new contract with the Islanders begins next season, marking his first professional opportunity.
Kotai's signing adds depth to the Islanders' goaltending roster. His consistent performance in junior and collegiate hockey suggests he could compete for a future role in the NHL. The two-year deal provides him with a chance to prove himself at the professional level.
