Islanders hold second in Metro despite Horvat’s absence and injury woes

The New York Islanders continue to maintain a strong position in the Metropolitan Division, despite key absences. Currently sitting in second place, they trail the Carolina Hurricanes by three points and are four points ahead of the Buffalo Sabres. Injuries and recovery timelines continue to influence the team's roster as they strive towards the playoffs.

Bo Horvat has missed recent games, including the trip to Nashville, while undergoing treatment on Long Island. Although not officially listed as injured, he had previously dealt with lower-body issues in December and January. The team has adapted by shifting centres like Mathew Barzal and Jean-Gabriel Pageau into expanded roles, rather than naming a direct replacement.

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov is back on the ice but does not yet have a confirmed return date. Meanwhile, defenceman Alexander Romanov is recovering well from shoulder surgery, with a possible playoff comeback in sight. On a positive note, rookie Matthew Schaefer has impressed by handling more ice time and tougher matchups. Coach Mathieu Darche praised the team's overall progress and positive atmosphere. However, contract talks for veterans Anders Lee and JG Pageau—both in the final year of their deals—remain unresolved. The Islanders hope Horvat may rejoin them on their road trip, though his return is not yet certain.

The Islanders hold a solid playoff spot but face uncertainty with Horvat's status and Varlamov's recovery. Romanov's potential return could bolster their defence, while Schaefer's development adds depth. With key contracts still pending, the team's focus remains on sustaining their division standing.
