Islanders adjust lineup ahead of Canada road trip with Varlamov's return
The New York Islanders held a practice session at Northwell Health Ice Center on Monday morning. The team prepared for their upcoming road trip in Canada while adjusting their line-up due to injuries and player returns.
Goaltender Semyon Varlamov rejoined the squad after a long absence. He last played in an official NHL game on November 29, 2024, before taking part in Monday's practice, where he faced shots from skaters. His return adds depth to the team's goaltending options.
Max Shabanov, however, missed the session due to a lower-body injury. His absence leaves a gap in the line-up as the Islanders finalise their roster for the trip. The forwards practised in set lines, with Anders Lee centring JG Pageau and Cal Ritchie. Kyle MacLean skated alongside Casey Cizikas and Ondrej Palat, while the top line featured Anthony Duclair, Brayden Schenn, and Simon Holmstrom. Emil Heineman, Bo Horvat, and Mathew Barzal formed another attacking trio, with Marc Gatcomb also taking part. On defence, the pairings included Adam Pelech with Ryan Pulock, Carson Soucy with Scott Mayfield, and Adam Boqvist with Matthew Schaefer. Tony DeAngelo rounded out the blue-line group. In goal, Ilya Sorokin and David Rittich were the confirmed options for the upcoming games.
The Islanders now head to Canada with a nearly full roster, aside from Shabanov's injury. Varlamov's return provides an extra option between the pipes, while the forwards and defenders have set combinations for the road ahead. The team will look to build momentum during their away fixtures.
