At the centre of the story is Charles, an eccentric lottery winner played by Tim Key. The band consists of the former couple Herb McGwyer and Nell Mortimer, played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan respectively.

The main cast members include Tom Basden as Herb McGwyer, Carey Mulligan as Nell Mortimer, Tim Key as Charles Heath, Sian Clifford, and Akemnji Ndifornyen as Michael, Nell's husband. The arrival of Michael adds additional tension to the fragile situation, as old conflicts and unresolved feelings between Herb and Nell resurface during the planned harmonious comeback.

Rupert Majendie produced the film, and the central character, Charles, lures the two musicians to an exclusive private concert on the island with a generous fee. The German premiere was warmly received by the Munich audience, making "The Ballad of Wallis Island" a must-see for those who appreciate lovable quirky characters, clever dialogues, melancholic feel-good moments, and the unifying power of music.

In an interview, Tim Key mentioned that the weekend of making the short film was one of the best in his 20s, and shooting the long version was one of the best things he's done in his 40s. Carey Mulligan greeted the audience with a video message before the film started, while Basden, Key, and Griffiths were present and received much applause.
