Titled: Syrian Brothers in Germany Accused of Plotting Church Attack in Sweden

In a Hamburg trial, the public prosecutor's office is pushing for lengthy prison stints for two Syrian brothers, one aged 29 and another five years his junior, accused of concocting a church attack in Sweden.

Senior prosecutor Ulf Bornemann argued for a six-year jail term for the elder brother before the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg, citing his preparation for a violent act threatening the nation and funding terrorism. The defense, however, pleaded for a two-and-a-half-year sentence for the younger brother, for aiding and abetting terrorism financing.

Bornemann disclosed that the older brother had slated an attack, driven by radical Islamist motives, through an explosive vest targeting people in a church in Sweden since spring this year. Initially, the deliberation was to strike a location with bars or nightclubs, but upon contact with an IS-associated individual via a messaging app going by "Emir," they elected to focus on a Swedish church.

Legal proceedings revealed that the younger brother aided his elderly sibling in gathering supplies. Despite claiming ignorance during the trial, Bornemann suggested he was guiltily aware of the situation based on the exchanged chats, phone calls, pertinent items already procured, and the older brother's confession.

Caught in Hamburg's St. Georg area during April, the eldest suspect, and the younger counterpart nabbed in Kempten, Allgäu, have been detained since their apprehension. The siblings were also charged with attempted membership or funding of a foreign terrorist organization; however, the identification of "Emir" and the possible IS connection wasn't validated, prompting Bornemann to limit the indictment to prevailing allegations.
