Islamic University's Tk 537-crore project faces fourth deadline extension
The Tk 537.07 crore infrastructure project at Islamic University in Kushtia is facing further delays. Originally set for completion by June 2026, the university now seeks another extension until December 31, 2027. Key structures, including nine 10-storey buildings, remain unfinished despite multiple deadline extensions. Approved in June 2018, the mega project broke ground in July 2021 after a three-year delay. By its first deadline in 2022, only 32 per cent of the work had been completed. The latest extension, pushing the target to June 30, 2026, still proved insufficient—land development hasn't even begun as of February 26, 2026.
The project includes nine 10-storey buildings and vertical expansions of 11 existing structures. Planned facilities cover dormitories for male and female students, academic blocks, staff housing, a second administrative building, and an extra wing for Sheikh Russell Hall. Additional features involve deep tube wells, rainwater harvesting, two 500 KVA substations, and solar panels. Currently, progress sits at around 70 per cent. Some structures are nearly finished, but none of the nine 10-storey buildings or vertical extensions have been completed. The university has now requested an extra 18 months to finish the remaining work.
With three extensions already granted, the project remains far from completion. The university's latest request for a December 2027 deadline highlights ongoing challenges. If approved, this would mark the fourth delay for a project initially meant to finish by 2022.
