Heading High in the Rockies: The G7 Summit's Unpredictable Wildcard

Is Trump planning to dismantle the G7 summit?

The leaders of the world's most influential nations are assembling at a remote Canadian resort for the G7 summit. But with Donald Trump in the mix, the outcome might not be as harmonious as expected.

The cowboy hats are out, as the heads of power from the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, the UK, and Japan prepare to meet in the Canadian Rockies from May 26th to 28th. Among the newbies this time around is Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is eager to forge a rapport with US President Donald Trump.

The thorn in every rosebush? Donald J. Trump, who has little love for the multilateral gatherings that epitomize the G7. With his flip-flopping allegiances and Twitter tirades, one cannot help but wonder: Will Trump torpedo any agreements reached or play ball this time?

Flashback to 2018: Trump, as US President, scuttled the G7's final declaration during Canada's tenure as host, repudiating the agreement en route back home. This time around, on the advice of German officials, there won't be a comprehensive joint statement, but instead several individual agreements on issues where all parties find common ground. The key objective, as Merz puts it, is to demonstrate that these industrial powerhouses are united and resolute in their actions.

On the agenda: the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, which Merz has identified as an existential threat to Israel, and an invitation extended to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to participate. But don't expect an official joint statement on Ukraine to come out of the summit.

A bit of politics on the side: Merz, in a move reminiscent of his White House meeting, has encouraged diplomats to engage with the Trump Administration withoutprotesting or preaching. "Talk to them without getting flustered," he advised. "Stop berating Donald Trump with disgust etched across your face."

Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, will host the event… at their own potential peril. Trump has exhibited hostility towards Canada in the past, questioning its sovereignty and threatening to annex parts of the Great White North. Needless to say, such talk isn't warmly welcomed by our neighbor to the north.

Economic sanctions, trade wars, and tariffs are bound to dominate discussions. The EU is pushing for increased pressure on Russia regarding Ukraine-related issues, which remains to be seen if the US will fall in line. And what about the proposed reduction of the price cap for Russian oil in the EU's 18th sanctions package? Germany has expressed optimism that the US, UK, Canada, and Japan might follow suit, but it's still uncertain if Trump will play along.

Spice things up a notch: India, Brazil, and South Africa will join the conversation on the summit's second day.

The Ukrainian issue is poised to be a major topic not only at the G7 summit but also at the upcoming NATO summit, as Germany seeks to maintain the US's continued military support for Ukraine. Key considerations include US intelligence services' information sharing with the Ukrainian military, a subject that Trump has been vocal about criticizing.

Climate change and trade: Canada aims to take these topics head-on at the G7 summit, even though Trump is not exactly a fan. The summit in the Rockies comes equipped with forests burning and wildfires raging, serving as evidence of the dire need for urgent, international action on environmental issues.

It's high stakes and high altitude in the wild Rockies, where the G7 leaders will gather to grapple with a host of pressing global concerns, all while staying clear of potential protests that could mar their peaceful discussions.

  2. As tensions between the US and Canada over trade and sovereignty remain, German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz's diplomatic approach, including urging diplomats to engage with the Trump Administration without protest or preaching, could play a crucial role in achieving mutual agreements on issues like climate change and Ukraine.
