Is There a Lack of Transparency Concerning Obama's Actions?

South of the border, things are escalating, and Cali's in chaos, thanks to Donald Trump's now-infamous immigration raids and the massive military deployment to L.A. evidently designed to serve Trump's dramatic agenda.

The situation is far from ordinary and has left many wondering why ex-President Barack Obama, a man still highly regarded among the masses, hasn't spoken up more often. In recent weeks, headlines constantly ask, "Where is Barack?"

The Atlantic questioned Obama's silence in an article titled, "Semi-Retirement vs. Speaking Out." They express concern that Trump's disturbing behavior hasn't been met with greater objection from Obama, the Democratic Party's most effective communicator.

Mark Leibovich, the article's author, acknowledges occasional public appearances by Obama that address Trump but also faults him for visits to Norway to meet king Harald V and summer reading recommendations. In simpler terms, he's lashing out at Obama for showing too little focus on Trump's presidency.

Yet close friends of Obama have jumped to his defense. Eric Holder, former US Attorney General still close to the ex-president, explains that Obama wants to avoid "banalization," refusing to become just another political pundit. On the other hand, Democratic activists call for Obama to come out of his shell and take a stronger stand against Trump's policies.

John Mark Hansen, political science professor at the University of Chicago, sheds some light on the issue. He suggests that the article misrepresents Obama because it ignores the fact that Obama has spoken out against Trump's actions on multiple occasions.

Tradition and avoiding divisiveness are factors behind Obama's strategic restraint. Hansen explains that it's not customary for former presidents to denounce their successors. This respect for the office has been upheld by all—including Obama.

Moreover, Obama wants to empower other rising Democrats rather than hogging the spotlight and potentially overshadowing them. This, Hansen believes, underlines Obama’s deference to other party members.

Currently, all eyes are on California Governor Gavin Newsom. With his eyes on the White House, the idea of Obama rallying against Trump is alluring, but how helpful would it truly be? One concern is that Trump would simply use Obama's criticism as a tool to demonize a perceived elite and rally his base.

As John Mark Hansen suggests, Obama’s criticism of Trump has ramped up in recent months compared to during past presidents. However, he’s opted for constructive engagement, emphasizing positive change, rather than direct confrontation.

In an increasingly divided nation, it's crucial for Obama to find a balance between speaking out against Trump and not further enflaming tensions. Ultimately, it may take more than a powerful voice like Obama's to banish the bitter taste of Trump's presidency. As Hansen reminds us, the future of the U.S. doesn't rely solely on a heroic figure but on many responsible voices working together to restore democracy.

  1. Immigration, a subject that has been at the forefront of recent war-and-conflicts, has been a contentious issue due to Donald Trump's now-infamous immigration raids.
  2. The general-news media, including outlets like The Atlantic, have questioned the silence of Barack Obama, a highly regarded figure, on Trump's presidency and its policies.
  3. Crime-and-justice, a significant part of politics, has been impacted by the intense focus on immigration, as some argue Obama should take a stronger stand against Trump's policies.
  4. Sports-betting, a subset of sports, might have been a preferred topic for Obama during his occasional public appearances, but criticism suggests he should have focused more on Trump's presidency.
  5. Fires, a type of accident, have been displacing people affected by the chaos in Cali, but the primary concern for many remains the ongoing immigration issue and the lack of vocal opposition from former President Obama.
