Is the Ryder Cup participation of Sergio Garcia drawing to a close?
Sergio Garcia, the Spanish golfing legend, has had a remarkable career, and his future in the Ryder Cup continues to be a topic of discussion.
After winning a tournament in Hong Kong earlier this year, Garcia's Ryder Cup playing career may be coming to an end, but his role as a vice-captain and potential captain is not. However, his game did not improve enough to be picked for the European Ryder Cup team in 2023.
Garcia rejoined the DP World Tour in November 2022, but his performance in recent tournaments has been less than stellar. He placed T34th at The Open and struggled with his game in the final eight LIV events, managing only one top-10 finish.
Despite these setbacks, Garcia has earned a total of 28.5 points in the Ryder Cup, the most all-time. His impressive points were earned in 1999, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021.
Garcia admitted that his current play was not good enough to accept a pick from Luke Donald. However, the landscape can change, and there is a lot of time until the Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2027 and even the one in Spain in 2031.
Jon Rahm, another Spanish golfing star, supports Garcia as a potential captain for the Ryder Cup in Spain in 2031. The Ryder Cup is expected to return to Spain in 2031, with Camiral hosting.
However, DP World Tour regulations currently prevent Garcia from assuming the captaincy role due to his resignation and insufficient events played in a season. This means that Garcia might have to settle for a vice-captain role for now.
As Garcia turns 46 years old and prepares for the Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2027, he will be 47 by the time Adare Manor rolls around. Only eight players have been older in Ryder Cup history. Garcia expressed that being the captain of the Ryder Cup in Spain in 2031 would be special, but it is too far in the future.
Despite missing out on qualifying for the US Open, Garcia finished 3rd in the LIV Golf League season standings. He was also the 7th highest European in Data Golf's rankings.
As the Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2027 approaches, it seems that Garcia is expected to be part of Team Europe as a vice-captain. Only time will tell if he will take on a captaincy role in the future.
