In the world of gaming, the latest instalment of the Borderlands series, Borderlands 4, has been causing quite a stir. The PC Gamer team has been delving into the game, and their opinions are as varied as the game's vibrant landscapes.

Robin Valentine, a senior editor, finds the story, setting, open world design, and traversal elements of the game to be falling flat. Robin expresses a sense of regret for spending too much time on side missions and collectibles rather than advancing the plot.

On the other hand, Harvey Randall, a staff writer, is about twenty hours into Borderlands 4 and finds the game enjoyable. Despite experiencing performance issues and concerns about the game's UI design, Harvey finds himself getting distracted by side-quest rabbit holes.

The game's on-ramp is initially slow, but once the player's build is established, the gameplay loop becomes engaging. Rory Norris, Guides Writer, praises the game's Vault Hunters, calling them some of the most fun characters in the series with build-defining perks in their skill trees.

Mollie Taylor, Features Producer, shares concerns about the game's inventory system, finding it frustrating to sort through weapons. She also notes a lack of ambient music during non-combat segments, making the empty segments feel more barren. However, Mollie appreciates the addition of gliding to the movement options and finds the movement and gunplay to feel great.

Performance-wise, Andy Edser, Hardware Writer, finds Borderlands 4 demanding on hardware. He recommends DLSS Balanced and 3x Multi Frame Generation to keep it smooth at near-max settings on an RTX 5070 Ti and AMD Ryzen 7 7700X. Andy expresses surprise at the game's performance issues, considering its visual similarities to previous versions of the game.

Robin Valentine, too, questions the game's performance, asking about upcoming optimisation patches. Andy shares this sentiment, wondering how a game with such performance issues could be released in today's market.

Despite the mixed reviews, the Borderlands series continues to captivate the PC Gamer team, with several members immersed in the game's open world. However, some concerns about the game's design, performance, and UI persist. Only time will tell if these issues will be addressed in future updates.

Borderlands 4 was developed by Gearbox Software, a studio now owned by 2K's parent company Take-Two Interactive, and published by 2K Games. The game is currently available for purchase on various platforms.
