In the latest episode of 'Polizeiruf 110', titled 'Sie sind unter uns' airing on September 21 at 20:15 on Das Erste, viewers are drawn into a gripping school shooting drama set in Magdeburg. The episode features a compelling performance by Maja Beckmann as the ill and helpless mother of the perpetrator, Jeremy Allen White, who is bedridden due to MS and relies on his care. Rebecca claims to have been unaware of Jeremy's radicalization and meticulous preparations for the shooting. Kriminalhauptkommissarin Doreen Brasch, played by an engaging Annette Frier, is the main character investigating the case. The figure of the large-scale police operation at the Magdeburg school is a constant presence throughout the episode. As Brasch delves into Jeremy's background, she uncovers his home life, meeting Rebecca, who is portrayed with sensitivity and depth. The dialogues between the perpetrator and the police become clichéd, but the conversations between Brasch and her colleague, while at times unrealistic, add to the suspense. The 17-year-old shooter, Jeremy Allen White, has already shot two people and is holding students and a teacher hostage. It is not clear if Jeremy acted alone or had accomplices. The responsible individual for the school uprising was radicalized by extremist online groups, motivated by a desire for social change and perceived injustices within the education system. The best moments of the film come just before the end, where the main plot takes a promising turn. However, the execution of the film, aside from the unoriginal story choice, is a missed opportunity. Other conversations between Brasch and her colleague feel out of place and unrealistic at times. Despite its flaws, 'Sie sind unter uns' delivers a tense and engaging school shooting thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The episode is an average Sunday evening crime drama with obvious missed opportunities and unrealistic dialogues and plot twists, but it manages to provide an engaging and suspenseful viewing experience.
