Is Maurice Hawkins both the Most Successful and Most Unsuccessful WSOPC Competitor?

Sloppy Stakes: Maurice Hawkins Wins Big, Yet Again Faces Unpaid Debt Drama

Maurice Hawkins claimed his 19th World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) ring last night in Tunica, Mississippi, tying him with Ari Engel for the most wins in circuit history. But the victory was swiftly overshadowed by the return of his infamous financial troubles.

Hawkins snatched the $400 NHL Monster Stack title at Horseshoe Tunica, a win that tied his slot with Engel in the historic books. However, the Fort Lauderdale pro soon found himself in the spotlight for a long-standing debt to former backer, Randy Garcia.

The online poker community had no qualms voicing their opinions as Hawkins was said to be "explaining to the table how rich he is" during the tournament, while Garcia shared his take on Hawkins' "richness."

"Maurice loves to brag about his wealth and earnings - neglecting to mention the foreclosure on his house, or his attempts to offload his watches before they ended up at the pawn shop," Garcia jabbed on Twitter.

Garcia also shared purported images related to Hawkins' financial missteps. In the eyes of the poker community, the WSOPC's biggest winner may be its biggest loser.

Poker buffs wasted no time in expressing their sentiments towards Hawkins, highlighting his questionable character despite his impressive poker career wins.

  • "Probably a couple fake Rolexes anyway. No chance they're real."
  • "He's always been a sleazy character."
  • "If his wife's watch is a 36mm, he'd probably only make $3,000 from the pawn shop if he got lucky."
  • "They all spout the same line of BS when it comes to borrowing money/staking. It's a constant script."

Garcia has been attempting to recover the $115,000 court-awarded debt from Hawkins for over five years now, a battle that has been documented extensively across the years. Yet, as history as shown, Hawkins hasn't settled his dues.

"The liar, thief, scammer Maurice claimed in his interview last year that he doesn’t owe anyone in poker any money and that he owed me $40k but has only paid back $20k. Here’s a thread showcasing his inconsistencies."

This year, Hawkins has amassed roughly $300,000 in winnings, adding four tournament titles to his roster, including a $140,752 WSOPC ring win in Baltimore in February.

Intriguingly, Hawkins' son predicted the win, calling his father out of the blue before the final table. "My son called me out of nowhere," Hawkins disclosed. "He said he had a dream I was going to win a significant amount of money."

Whether that call would prompt Hawkins to finally settle his debt with Garcia remains to be seen. For now, the wait continues - five years and counting for Garcia.
