Facebook Twitter Whatsapp Email Print Copy Link The world watches as Norway's most acclaimed sports family divides.

A tense standoff unfolds: Son versus father, daughter versus dad, with mother and siblings taking the witness stand. The Ingebrigtsen family's current predicament might be every parent's nightmare.

An official verdict is due on Monday. Will Gjert Ingebrigtsen, father of the renowned Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen, face years in jail? According to Norwegian law, a potential sentence could span several years[1][2][5]. The prosecution demands 2.5 years, while the defense pushes for acquittal.

A torrent of media attention engulfs Norway following this family feud. The Ingebrigtsen family stands as one of the nation's most esteemed, with Jakob—currently injured—emerging as a celebrated athlete, having won Olympic gold in both Tokyo (1500 meters) and Paris (5000 meters), as well as boasting numerous world titles and records[4].

Breaking Away From Father and Coach

Public scrutiny intensifies with the publication of an opinion piece authored by Jakob and his brothers, Filip and Henrik, in "Verdens Gang" in 2023. In this piece, the brothers share stories of their childhood marred by physical violence and threats from their father and mentor, prompting investigations against Gjert Ingebrigtsen for potential abuse[3]. At first, charges focused on Gjert's treatment of his daughter; however, by the end of 2024, the indictment was expanded to include his alleged mistreatment of Jakob[3]. The lengthy trial took place this spring, as family members took turns testifying in the Sør-Rogaland District Court in Sandnes near Stavanger.

A Plea for Child Protection

For Jakob, the trial has a deeper significance: it's a chance to tell his siblings' stories, but also to emphasize a wider issue: the protection of children from domestic violence.

"My siblings and I will persevere, regardless of the court's decision. Many children cannot," the 24-year-old wrote in a follow-up piece in "Verdens Gang," subsequently read aloud in court[3]. "They live their lives in fear. Let us not forget them after the cameras in the Sandnes district court are turned off." He concluded his heartfelt plea for increased attention to these children with the words, "Not all of them can escape their troubles like I did."

Gjert Ingebrigtsenm Remains Adamant: Innocent

The 59-year-old Gjert has consistently denied the allegations, both before and during the trial. He contends he has only ever had the best intentions[3]. Although admitting that he may not have been a perfect father and husband, he maintains that he has never lashed out physically or psychologically[3].

His children, with Jakob and his sister Ingrid at the forefront, hold a different perspective. In the trial, five siblings testified that they were subjected to a regime of fear[3]. Tone, Gjert's wife, reportedly stood by her husband in court and distanced herself from the five children making the accusations[3]. She felt compelled to voice her support only behind closed doors and away from the media[3].

Interestingly, Gjert has not served as his children's coach since 2022[3]. Instead, he's been supporting the career of middle-distance runner Narve Gilje Nordås for some time now[3]. His most recent public appearance took place at one of his protege's competitions in Bergen[3]. When Browbeat by Norwegian journalists, he conversed at length on various topics but abruptly disappeared without a word when asked about the impending verdict on June 16th, 2025[5].
