IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel to Step Down After Trump Inauguration

In a surprising move, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel has announced his decision to step down from his role after President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday. Werfel's term as IRS Commissioner was set to extend until 2027, but he has chosen to leave early.

Werfel's departure comes after Trump announced his intention to nominate a new IRS Commissioner. Trump has nominated former Rep. Billy Long, R-Mo., for the position. However, there is no clear information about a current alternative candidate if the mention of Billy Long is incorrect.

Werfel's decision was not a forced one. In discussions with IRS employees, members of Congress, Trump transition team staff, and other stakeholders, Werfel expressed that his job as a civil servant is to ensure a new IRS Commissioner is set up for success.

Werfel has been transforming the IRS since his appointment in 2022, using $60 billion from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act for initiatives such as boosting customer service, modernizing technology, and increasing staffing for enforcement on wealthy individuals and corporations.

However, Werfel's efforts have faced opposition from Congressional Republicans who have attempted to revoke the IRA funding on multiple occasions. With Republicans now in control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, they have indicated they will push to revoke the IRA funding.

Werfel expressed gratitude to those who hoped he would continue in his role as IRS Commissioner. He stated that he had a desire to stay until the end of his term, just prior to Trump nominating a replacement. However, Werfel could have stayed in the role and forced Trump to fire him, but he chose to leave.

Biden opted not to replace former Commissioner Charles Rettig, following a 30-year precedent. Werfel will step down after Trump's inauguration on Monday, leaving behind a legacy of transforming the IRS and modernizing its operations.
