Iron Maiden and Tool musicians perform Jeff Beck's hit together at a recent wedding event
Iron Maiden, the legendary British heavy metal band that first formed in 1975, is currently in the midst of its 50th-anniversary celebrations. Amidst these festivities, the band has been making headlines for various exciting events, including a documentary film about their complete history, a wedding performance, and a few changes in the band's lineup.
In a surprising turn of events, drummer Nicko McBrain, who suffered a TIA (transient ischaemic attack, or mini-stroke) in January 2023, was able to take part in Iron Maiden's worldwide Future Past world tour from June 2023 to December 2024. This marked his first performance since his retirement from the live stage last year. McBrain also made a comeback at a wedding in Tuscany, Italy on Friday, September 12, where he joined forces with Adrian Smith, another former member of Iron Maiden.
The wedding performance was a unique event, not the first time Maiden members have played as a wedding band. In fact, in 1984, during the European leg of their World Slavery tour, Maiden gatecrashed a Polish wedding and played a cover of Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water.
During the summer, Maiden played the European leg of their Run For Your Lives tour, exclusively playing material from their first 10 albums. This tour was a celebration of the band's early years, and it seems that the 50th-anniversary celebrations are set to continue, with future dates for 2026 expected to be announced soon.
In addition to the tours, Iron Maiden has been making waves with the upcoming documentary film, set to be released theatrically in the autumn. This film will cover the band's complete history, featuring input from both members and ex-members, as well as famous fans such as Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich from Metallica, and Gene Simmons from Kiss.
The band's lineup has seen some changes, with Simon Dawson, who's performed with Steve Harris in Harris' side-project British Lion, taking over as Iron Maiden's new live drummer. Justin Chancellor, the bassist of Tool, also participated in the wedding performance.
Nicko McBrain, besides his onstage involvement, has also been active offstage. He recently announced a podcast called Metal Sticks, which he created together with Stefan Kaufmann. The trio even covered Jeff Beck's Going Down during a performance.
It's an exciting time for Iron Maiden fans, with the band's 50th-anniversary celebrations, upcoming tours, and the highly anticipated documentary film promising a wealth of exciting content. Stay tuned for more updates on this heavy metal powerhouse.
