Wrestling Drama "Iron Claw" Wows with Authenticity and Emotion
Based on true events, the film delves into the unbelievable story of the Von Erich brothers, a wrestling dynasty who inherited their father Fritz's (Holt McCallany) mantle and clashed with tragedy. The rise and fall of this family forced the wrestling world into introspection, with "the family curse" being widely believed.
Zac Efron channeled his inner wrestler in preparation for the role, shaping his physique into a perfect eight-pack. However, his stoic performance and the shallow pop soundtrack left little appeal in his muscular form and slick 70s and 80s hairstyle. His only real connection is established with his on-screen wife, Pam (Lily James), the young woman he meets and later marries, who boldly approaches him for a date. Efron's inarticulate nature is fully evident in this dramatic moment.
Conversely, Fritz, the puppet master of this conflict, remained obsessed with the politics of professional wrestling, fervently believing he had the power to deny him the world championship title he coveted and deserved.
Harris Dickinson, as the gentle son Stanley, prefers music over body slams and has a sensitive side unseen in the world of wrestling. Despite Efron's prominent presence as the ensemble's leading man, he gives a subtle and grounded performance that might otherwise be overlooked, given center stage attention.
Although Wrestling contests are known for predetermined outcomes, as highlighted by Pam, the intensity of these matches, with notable wrestling legends like Ric Flair in the mix, is faithfully replicated in the film. The villains of the pieces, however, are overly aggressive, making it challenging to generate enthusiasm or tension. By the time the dominator yields, the winner is already known.
The title "The Iron Claw" refers to a wrestling move passed down through generations, which aims to inflict intense pain and submit opponents. In contrast, this film lacks the gripping power of the original title.
Whether you catch "The Iron Claw" in theaters or at home, the film's authenticity shines through. With the movie scheduled to hit US theaters on December 13th, audiences can anticipate an emotionally charged experience.
Note: The film is rated R.
