Ireland acquires four Airbus H145M helicopters
The Irish Defence Forces have taken a significant step towards modernizing their fleet with the acquisition of four H145M helicopters, as announced by the Republic of Ireland Department of Defence. This twin-engine light utility and combat helicopter, developed by Airbus Helicopters, is renowned for its versatility, advanced technology, and high performance.
The H145M, a military version of the civilian H145 helicopter that has recently surpassed the eight million flight hours mark globally, will serve as a critical enabler to the Army, Naval Service, and Special Operations Forces in Ireland. Its multi-role versatility allows it to perform a broad spectrum of military missions, from troop transport and medevac to reconnaissance, search and rescue, and light attack roles.
Equipped with the HForce weapon management system, the H145M can carry various weapons, including machine guns, rockets, and missiles, and has the potential for future weaponry integration. The helicopter is also fitted with the Helionix digital avionics suite and a high-performance 4-axis autopilot, reducing pilot workload and enabling precision flying under various conditions.
The H145M offers markedly higher performance and capability than the helicopters currently in service in Ireland. It has a maximum speed of around 260 km/h (with a cruise speed slightly below) and excellent maneuverability and high-altitude performance, enabling operations in challenging environments. The current version of the H145M features a five-bladed bearingless main rotor, contributing to its class-leading low acoustic footprint, which may help reduce noise pollution during operations.
In addition to its performance advantages, the H145M also boasts survivability and survivability enhancements. It features crashworthy design elements and can be equipped with optional defensive aids such as infrared jammers and ballistic protection. The helicopter can be outfitted with modular mission equipment, supporting rapid role changes and enhancing its operational efficiency.
The H145M's role in the modernization of the Irish Air Corps fleet has been welcomed by Irish Defence Forces' Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, who believes the helicopters will play a key role in the transformation of the Irish Defence Forces. Lenny Brown, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in the UK, expressed his honor at being selected to play this key role.
In conclusion, the H145M helicopters, with their advanced technology, high performance, and versatility, are set to enhance the Irish Air Corps rotary capability, providing a significant boost to the country's defense and security tasks, as well as its capacity for homeland security and international peacekeeping missions.
The H145M, with its advanced capabilities, is expected to bolster the Irish Defence Forces in their varied military missions, such as troop transport, medevac, reconnaissance, search and rescue, and light attack roles, making it a valuable asset in sports of national security. Its adaptable design and potential for future weaponry integration will ensure it remains an effective tool in a dynamic security landscape.
